It’s NaNoWriMo again! (National Novel Writing Month) *Celebrates*

For those of you that haven’t heard of NaNoWriMo, it’s a global event that comes around each November.

It pushes both aspiring and professional writers alike, out of procrastination and to their desks, to get something down on paper every day in November.

The goal at the end of the month: A novel.

Whether it’s the roughest first draft in existence, the improved second draft, the better (hopefully) twenty-second draft or the golden prize: The final draft.

Write now and edit later.

Last year, I participated by plotting my novel and then I spent the year researching and sifting through all the bad and good ideas I came up with. Right now, I have a plot I’m proud of, with a few things missing, but it’s a plot nonetheless!

I really hope to have a first rough draft by the end of the year.

Also, last year I had a full-time job, so I couldn’t spend as much time as I would have liked on my writing. But I’m currently unemployed right now (please employ me), so the bright side is: I can write, a lot.

[ I’m actually buying a desk lamp today for my late night/early morning sessions. Anyone else find writing so much easier at 2am? I’m sure it’s because my tired brain doesn’t question every single word and stop to edit every thirty seconds. ]

If you’re participating, good luck! You can find web banners & buttons on the NaNoWriMo site for free if you want to spread the word.

Now, some of the best writing advice/motivation I’ve found:

  1. “The first draft of anything is shit” – Ernest Hemingway.
  2. “You fail only if you stop writing” – Ray Bradbury.
  3. “A writer is a world trapped in a person” – Victor Hugo.
  4. “Everyone possesses the ability to write at least one good book in their life” – My Nan.

& For opening chapter inspiration, check out my ‘Famous First Lines’ blog post.

Thanks for reading,

Let me know if you’re taking part!

  1. I’m not participating with NaNoWriMo but I am in the process of writing a story, I think the movement itself is interesting, but I think it’s pressure prone if I did it… I want a free amount of time so I didn’t feel overwhelmed.

I’ve been researching for the past month… I literally just bought some reference books this weekend and I’m starting to come up with (and see) my characters in my head..Hopefully before the end of December (holy crap!) I’ll be starting to write out my first draft :)

    Good luck on yours though!

    1. Thank you! That’s so awesome Meghan, I’m excited for you writing a story! :)

I write all year round, but I find nanowrimo is a good push of motivation for me. I can get a lot of words down in November. But some days, I just relax and refuel myself.

Researching is so fun (and stressful). I hope you enjoy it!

Good luck and try to blog about it, so I can read your experiences :D

      1. You’re welcome!!

I might take some pictures of the stuff I’ve written so far but I’m a tab bit afraid that I might lose sight of the whole project. I’ve written a couple short stories before but actually finishing them is a totally different story :/
